On 3 November the AFC moved the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia from January 2027 to 23 December 2027 - 21 January 2028. That changes Japan's coaching handover, frees up January 2027, creates a clash with the U-23 Asian Cup that doubles as Olympic qualifying, and reshapes the still-unannounced 2030 World Cup qualifiers. We separate what is decided from what we project, using the last postponement (the 2023 Asian Cup) as a guide.
The Asian Football Confederation announced on 3 November that the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 has been rescheduled from 7 January - 5 February 2027 to 23 December 2027 - 21 January 2028. That is a delay of almost a year, with Saudi Arabia staying on as host. The AFC cited "substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions" caused by regional developments. In October, attacks by Yemen's Houthi movement caused casualties at Riyadh's international airport, and Japan's government advised against all travel to Riyadh, a host city.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Old dates | 7 January - 5 February 2027 (24 teams, Saudi Arabia) |
| New dates | 23 December 2027 - 21 January 2028 (same host) |
| Reason | Logistics and travel disruption caused by the regional situation (AFC) |
| Final? | Not yet. The new dates go to FIFA for approval |
| Not announced | Match schedule and venues, and whether the existing draw stands (Japan are in Group F with Qatar, Thailand and Indonesia) |
The signs were there. AFC president Sheikh Salman said on 14 October that a move to 2028 was an option, and JFA president Tsuneyasu Miyamoto said on 23 October that staging the event was "not easy at this point". Yet the local organising committee had published kick-off times based on the original dates only on 26 October, so the decision came quickly.
| When | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Nov 2026 | Singapore trip (14 Nov Brazil, 17 Nov Paraguay) | Unchanged. Reports say these may be Moriyasu's last games |
| 30 Dec 2026 | Send-off friendly at Panasonic Stadium Suita | No longer an Asian Cup warm-up; uncertain |
| Jan-Feb 2027 | Asian Cup (Saudi Arabia) | Free. Coincides with the J.League winter break |
| From Mar 2027 | Go Oiwa takes over after the Asian Cup | Reports say Oiwa still starts in March, alongside his Olympic team role |
| Dec 2027 - Jan 2028 | - | Asian Cup |
Hajime Moriyasu extended his contract after the 2026 World Cup with the plan of stepping down after the Asian Cup. With the tournament pushed back a year, the coach in charge at the Asian Cup is now likely to be Oiwa rather than Moriyasu. The JFA had made no official statement as of 3 November.
The new dates create a clash with the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, which Japan hosts in January 2028. It doubles as Asian qualifying for the LA Olympics, with the top two earning places. Reports put it at 4-22 January 2028. The Asian Cup final is on 21 January, so the two run almost entirely in parallel.
| Asian Cup | U-23 Asian Cup | |
|---|---|---|
| Dates | 23 Dec 2027 - 21 Jan 2028 | 4-22 Jan 2028 (reported) |
| Host | Saudi Arabia | Japan |
| At stake | Asian champions | LA Olympic places (top two) |
| Japan coach | Go Oiwa (planned) | Go Oiwa (already in charge of the U-21s) |
It is not just the calendar. Oiwa is due to keep the Olympic generation (born on or after 1 January 2005) while running the senior side, so one coach would face two tournaments at once. Players would be contested too: Japan's autumn 2026 senior squads included four from the Olympic generation - Kento Shiogai (2005), Keisuke Goto (2005), Shunsuke Saito (2005) and Ryunosuke Sato (2006). The more those players establish themselves with the senior team, the more one of the two tournaments will be weakened. The AFC's announcement did not address the overlap.
Neither the format nor the dates of Asian qualifying for the 2030 World Cup (Spain, Portugal, Morocco) have been announced as of 3 November. But there is a precedent. The 2026 qualifiers were also interrupted by an Asian Cup: the 2023 edition, given up by China, was played in Qatar in January-February 2024, with second-round qualifiers on either side of it.
| Stage | Last time (2026 WC) | This time (2030 WC) - projected |
|---|---|---|
| First round | October 2023 (20 lowest-ranked teams) | March and June 2027 |
| Second round (Japan enter here) | November 2023 - June 2024 | September 2027 - June 2028 |
| Asian Cup | Jan-Feb 2024 (Qatar), mid-second round | Dec 2027 - Jan 2028 (Saudi Arabia), mid-second round |
| Third round | September 2024 - June 2025 | September 2028 - June 2029 |
| Fourth & fifth rounds | October & November 2025 | October & November 2029 |
| Finals | June-July 2026 | June-July 2030 |
Under the old dates, qualifying could have begun after the Asian Cup ended in February 2027. Now the tournament lands in the middle of the qualifying period. The natural fix is the same shape as last time: start the second round in autumn 2027, pause for the Asian Cup and finish by June 2028. The third round's ten matches fit exactly into the windows from September 2028 to June 2029, leaving little room to push the second round back.
The other variable is the AFC Nations League. A draft reported in October would launch it in 2030, with a pilot in 2028-29 whose initial tiers would be set by "joint qualifiers" rather than the FIFA ranking - a role the second round of 2030 World Cup qualifying could play. It is still a draft, and the AFC is consulting its member associations.

| Nation | Impact |
|---|---|
| South Korea | Local media called it unprecedented. Interim coach Robert Moreno's contract is close to expiring, and for Son Heung-min's 1992-born generation the delay pushes back what could be their last major tournament |
| Saudi Arabia | Remains host, and the tournament doubles as a dry run for staging the 2034 World Cup |
| Teams with many Europe-based players | Late December to January is the Premier League's festive fixture crunch. As with the old January-February dates, clubs and national teams will have to negotiate releases |
As of 3 November 2026. The new dates still need FIFA approval. U-23 Asian Cup 2028 dates are from media reports; the JFA has not announced dates or venues.
